WOMEN, AUTISM & ADHD

Autism and ADHD are neurodivergences that can affect men and women. However, women often experience them differently from men, which historically made it more difficult to diagnose.

Some common experiences of autism in women include difficulty with social interactions, sensory sensitivities and intense interests in specific topics. Similarly, ADHD experiences may involve difficulty concentrating, initiating tasks and procrastination.

Having a combined diagnostic assessment for neurodivergence is a personal and important decision to make. Jen believes these assessments should be neuro-affirming, validating, informative, clear and accessible. It is important to assess for both, however, individual assessments are also available.

Autism and ADHD have historically been seen as 'disorders' or 'impairments.' Today, neuro-affirming language is preferred. Women with autism may have a unique perspective and attention to detail, while those with ADHD may be highly creative and adaptable.

By embracing these strengths, women with autism and ADHD can thrive in both their personal and professional lives. The human experience is often enriched by neurodiversity.
